The talk: Green Computing—the Practicioner’s Perspective
Companies are trying to reduce their carbon footprint. For many, IT is a relevant factor on that journey, and they are looking at the new field of GreenOps for ideas and answers.
Based on his work at Thoughtworks, a global IT consultancy that is also a founding member of the Green Software Foundation, Erik will provide the developer's perspective on GreenOps. Starting with some key concepts and principles, the talk moves to specific techniques, methods, and tools to measure and reduce an organization's carbon footprint.
Why I look forward to this talk
I’m a big fan of Erik’s work! To give you one example, 20+ years ago, when I had been benefiting from, speaking and writing about Test-Driven Development (TDD) for years, I had a short session with Erik where we pair programmed. And all of a sudden, my TDD-skills were twice as effective!
Erik also wrote a chapter in my latest book—it might be the best in the whole book! Inversion of Control and Dependency Injection may be mainstream nowadays, but 20 years ago, they were new and different to most of us.
Over the years, the obvious place for me to run into Erik has been the Software Architecture Workshop (SAW). One reflection about all my discussions with him there is that I haven’t noticed him being wrong even once. (I’m probably somewhere around 50% myself.)
We’ve done some work at factor10 regarding green computing, but I just know this presentation will inspire us, and the rest of the audience, to up our game!
